Free Time
Journal Entry: Sun May 25, 2008, 7:03 PM
I like having free time. I haven't had a lot this quarter, and now it's Sunday of a three-day weekend. I like this feeling.
It's been a long year, dealing with love, school, movies, obligations, rent, apartments, family, and finding my place in the world. I think love has been the hardest one though. It's not the subject that is necessarily always on my conscious mind, but I think it's always on the back burner. And just having those thoughts there, of all your desires and wants and unfinished business and wanting and waiting and heart-breaking and breaking hearts and moving on and trying something new, just gets really tiring. But it's even worse when you keep it inside, which I think I tend to do. It messes with your mental health.
I've directed two movies this year. I think that's really exciting. "Chimes of Gaviota," a 20-minute mockumentary, and "Doodle," a 6-minute silent 16mm short. I've had so much fun making movies practically non-stop this year (especially this Spring quarter), but I'm honestly burned out for awhile. I want to focus on the transient arts for awhile... part of my always liked the idea of fame. You can get famous making movies, you can "make a name for yourself," you can be remembered. But in the long-long-looong-run, nobody will really remember me. I want to take some time to develop my eyes and ears and hands and heart to more shifting art, like theater, or graffiti, or just learning how to dance on my skateboard. I want to learn how to make art for the pure pleasure of doing it for myself again. Then maybe, if I want to, I can go back and apply that feeling back to my movies.
Here is a bunch more of my best art from this year (I think), mostly all done for the school newspaper. I'll be atarting a full-blown narrative comic next year which will be really cool. I love drawing and comics and this is definitely something I'll enjoy getting even more immersed in next year.
